Grape varieties

Touriga Nacional
Unanimously considered one of the best varieties for producing Port wine and Red wine. It grows vigorously in the hot, dry regions of the Douro. This variety is of low yield, characterised by small, black grapes that produce full-bodied wines full of tannins. While young, these wines are very dark, and later they are considerably concentrated and aromatically complex.
Touriga Nacional
Touriga Franca
It is recognised as one the main varieties for producing Port wine. It is of regular yield and is resistant to high temperatures. This variety is present on a large scale in the Douro region and associated with some of the best Red wines of Douro and Porto. Its aromatic persistence, its firm and smooth tannins, and its the elegance and intensity, all of these show the complexity that results from the choice of this variety.
Touriga Franca
Tinta Roriz
One of the varieties for the production of Porto Wine. Also known as the Alentejo Aragonez, it is used in the Douro and also in the Dão. In Spain, where it is widely cultivated, it is given the name Temptanilho. It is also present in France, Argentina and California. It produces medium-sized bunches, with bluish grapes that result in a ruby-coloured wine of balance acidity, and good structure and alcoholic content. It achieves greater potential when blended with other varieties.

Sousão
A Portuguese wine grape that is used in the production of port wine. While originated in the Minho regions, it is used primarily in Australia, California and South Africa. In Portugal, it is also an authorized planting in the Douro, and Dão-Lafões area (Vinho do Dão). The grape is known for the deep color it produces in a wine as well as its coarse and raisin taste.

Tinto Cão
Is a red Portuguese wine grape variety that has been grown primarily in the Douro region since the sixteenth century. The vine produces very low yields which has led it close to extinction despite the high quality of wine that it can produce.
Improvements in bilateral cordon training and experiments at University of California - Davis have helped to sustain the variety. The vine favors cooler climates and can add finesse and complexity to a wine blend.
Tinto Cão
Tinta Francisca
Is a red wine grape found primarily in the Douro DOC and is sometimes used in Port wine productions. The grape is often confused with the similarly named Touriga Francesa. The grape is known for its sweet perfume but has less concentration than other Port grapes.
Tinta Francisca
Viosinho
This north-eastern grape survives for the most part scattered here and there in the old mixed white vineyards of the Douro. Traditionally, Viosinho has been an unpopular variety with growers because of its very low yields. It's only recently that winemakers have realised what a treasure it is, as a component both in port and in unfortified Douro white blends. It makes full-bodied but fresh, fragrant, well-balanced wines, performing best in hot, sunny climates where it is less prone to oidium and botrytis infection. Bunches and grapes are small and early-ripening.
Viosinho
Rabigato
Planted throughout the Douro Superior, this is one of the Douro's best white grapes, contributing bright, refreshing acidity to white blends. When (rarely) it is vinified as a single variety, its aroma is reminiscent of acacia and organe blossom, with vegetal notes and a strongly mineral character, full body and good acid structure. With medium-sized bunches are medium-sized, the grapes are small and greeny-yellow in colour.
Rabigato
Verdelho
Verdelho came to fame on Portugal's islands - Madeira and the Azores - as a base wine for fortified wines. Nowadays very little remains, growing mostly on high ground. Bunches of tiny yellowish-green grapes are small and compact.
Verdelho
Arinto
This is one of the numerous white grape varieties most cultivated in Portugal. It adapts easily to the different soils, needing heat and humidity. Wine from this grape is highly complex, fruity and acidulous.
